The 95th Maui County Fair: Celebrating the Greatest Things in Life
Submitted by: Peter Hume, Legal Assistant
The 95th annual Maui Fair takes place October 5-8, 2017, loaded with rides, games, contests, events, attractions, and entertainment. The theme of this year’s fair is “Celebrating the Greatest Things in Life.”
Along with all of the activities and fun, one of the highlights for many fair-goers is the food! Among the multitude of food vendors, one in particular stands out for me: the BBQ pork sandwiches from Mana’o Radio, in booth C-1. Yes, the sandwiches are delicious, and the go-to choice of many seasoned fair attendees. But the reason they stand out to me is because they have a deeper meaning.
BBQ pork sandwiches can have a deeper meaning? Yes, they can, and they do!
You see, Mana’o Radio is Maui’s only community-supported radio station, and the staff of DJs, engineers, and administration are all volunteers. We have live DJs from 6am to midnight, every day of the week, and the musical flavors are ever-changing, as the DJ changes every 3 or 4 hours. We never play any commercials, we only play the music that we feel inspired to play. And yes, I am part of that effort. By day, I may be Peter Hume: Legal Assistant, but by night I am Pistol Pete: Mana’o Radio DJ (Wednesday nights, 5-8pm). I volunteer as a DJ because music is one of the greatest things in life to celebrate (see how I linked that all together?).
Every year at the Maui Fair, Mana’o Radio serves up BBQ pork sandwiches to raise money for the ongoing operation of the station. While the staff all works for free, there are still expenses for keeping the station on the air and on the web. The Maui Fair is our number one source for funding every year, and we count on the public’s appetite and generosity to add a much-needed boost to our budget so that we can maintain and expand our musical empire. Our next challenge is to add a transmitter on the West side of Maui by the end of 2017, and we are about to reach that goal, with your help.
This year, while taking in the sights and sounds and smells of the fair, be sure to include a lip-smackin’, finger-lickin’, tummy-pleasin’ BBQ pork sandwich, also available with rice and potato mac, and know that you’re helping a noble cause with every bite.
